Mapleleaf-Viewing by Utagawa Toyokuni III 1858
Mapleleaf viewing was as popular in autumn as cherry blossom viewing was in
spring. Here a girl stands on a mat laid out at a mapleaf viewing picnic. A
sake bottle and smoking utensils can be seen in the corner. The vignette
shows a landscape of the maples with sea behind. A small branch of leaves
has been broken off and festively used to decorate her pack. From the series
Edo meisho hyakunin bijo, "Famous Places in Edo Compared to a Hundred
Beautiful Women." Each print includes a landscape vignette by Kunihisa, who
lived with Toyokuni III and married his daughter.
